It is a marine predatory fish that feeds mainly on smaller fish, crustaceans and small invertebrates. It lives in the Adriatic, but is also common in the eastern Atlantic, all Mediterranean seas and the Black Sea. It likes to stay in brackish water, i.e. semi-saline coastal water at the mouths of rivers. This is why it likes to stay in the Gulf of Piran. It spawns from January to March. It is metallic grey on the back and silvery white on the belly. They can grow up to 1 m and weigh more than 10 kg.
